Sweet Cheeks Merino
Sweet Cheeks Merino was started in New Zealand, in 2007, by two very clever mums.
They knew they needed a fabric that was not only warm but hypoallergenic and soft against sensitive skin. Merino wool was the obvious choice due to being exceptionally warm for it’s weight, yet breathable and soft on delicate skin. It’s hypoallergenic properties ensure it is safe for babies and kids with sensitive skin, eczema or allergies. And in some cases, it has even been shown to reduce allergies
There was nothing on the market that ticked all these boxes. So they decided to create their own.
What started as a few pieces to meet their kids needs, quickly turned into items that were requested by their wider friends and family. From that, Sweet Cheeks Merino was born. They created a line of beautiful merino wool products that have stood the test of time and have been loved by families for well over a decade.
Today, Sweet Cheeks is owned by a small family unit who are spread across Australia and Auckland, New Zealand.
Sweet Cheeks Merino are passionate about
Minimising the Environmental Impact
Sweet Cheeks Merino focus on slow fashion. According to Woolmark, the average shopper is buying 60% more clothes than they were 15 years ago – but only keeping them for half as long. This is clogging up landfill with discarded clothing. To combat this, Sweet Cheeks Merino makes garments that are top quality and made to last. Creating basics that never go out of style.
Merino wool itself is a totally sustainable, 100% biodegradable fibre. Merino fully breaks down in a few months and releases valuable nutrients back into nature as it does (the very opposite to synthetics, which are made from fossil fuels and crude oil and take hundreds of years to decompose – releasing micro-plastics as they go).
Sweet Cheeks Merino is committed to minimising waste. All usable fabric is cut into beanies and/or donated to charity. Any fabric too small to be sewn is recycled or composted. Fabric dying is also hard on the environment, so all fabrics have used GOTS certified dyed. Fabric is only purchased from a solar powered company that recycles and reuses 85% of its water. All packaging and swing tags are recyclable and no single use plastic is used in dispatch, instead using compostable or recyclable mailers.
All clothing is manufactured in Auckland, New Zealand, allowing complete control and visibility over the production line. Sweet Cheeks Merino choose only to work with businesses who share the same values and they personally know their cutter and sewer (other small family businesses) and visit them regularly.
